FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Commissioning a translation can be a daunting task, especially if you have no or little knowledge of the target language. The following is a list of questions – and their answers – designed to give you a better insight into the translation process. If you cannot find the answer you are looking for, please get in touch and I'll be happy to answer any question you may have.

It's easy.  Contact me by phone or email and tell me more about your requirements. It would be useful if you could provide me with at least the following information:

• a sample document (or the complete finalised text if you have it)

• a word count if you cannot provide me with the text for translation;

• the file format used and required;

• the intended purpose of the translation.

01
I'M INTERESTED IN USING YOUR SERVICES. WHAT NEXT?

On average, you should allow one working day per 2,500 words of source text, although this can vary depending on the complexity of the source text and the amount of repetitions.

02
HOW LONG WILL THE TRANSLATION PROCESS TAKE?

Languages are a very complex system of communication. Each project is different and requires a tailored approach. That's why I do not publish pre-established rates. I read over every single project so that I can give you a comprehensive quote, taking into account the length, complexity and format of the source text, as well as your specific requirements. I offer a free quotation service, so please get in touch.

03
WHAT ARE YOUR RATES? HOW MUCH DOES A TRANSLATION COST?

On average, you should allow one working day per 2,500 words of source text, although this can vary depending on the complexity of the source text and the amount of repetitions.

04
WHY ONLY OFFER LANGUAGE SERVICES FROM ENGLISH AND SPANISH INTO FRENCH?

Once you have decided to commission the translation, I will ask you for the following:

• the finalised source text;

• all drawings and diagrams (even if they don't include text for translation) that accompany the source document;

• background information / references / existing glossaries relating to your document;

• the details of a named person who can be contacted to answer queries.

05
HOW CAN I HELP THE TRANSLATION PROCESS RUN AS SMOOTHLY AS POSSIBLE?

Being your single point of contact for all your French language needs, I am acutely aware of all your organisational needs and cultural demands, which enables me to answer your queries quickly and efficiently. This exclusive and close relationship means that you will always know who to reach out to should you require an important document translated urgently or some expert advice quickly.

06
WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE YOU INSTEAD OF A TRANSLATION AGENCY

Sometimes, work can’t wait. I can handle tight deadlines and weekend work at a surcharge and always aim to reply to enquiries on the same day. If you have an urgent enquiry, contact me so I can help you meet your most pressing needs.

07
I HAVE AN URGENT QUERY. CAN YOU HELP?

Yes. CAT (computer-aided translation) tools are especially useful when translating larger pieces or when you intend to have several documents translated over a certain period of time. They allow the translator to build client-specific glossaries and to maintain uniform terminology for all projects. I use memoQ, which is compatible with most other translation tools, including SDL Trados.

08
DO YOU USE CAT TOOLS?

Payment should be arranged via wire transfer or Transferwise. All invoices should be paid no later than 30 days after the invoice date, unless other arrangements have been made beforehand.
